This is my pooch Hamish McNeill Thomson-Frantom, proving that toy poodles are real dogs. He has been gone 2 years in September and I still miss him terribly.
When he was alive and I took him for walks many people didn't see him as a 'real dog'. He was very pretty I guess but that's like assuming blondes aren't smart. Poodles are traditionally highly preened and have ridiculous pom-pom haircuts, though these are practical when they are used for hunting. Hamish hated being preened and I never subjected him to that, though he did need haircuts because poodles have wool and don't shed hair. They are like sheep. He looked like a fluffy little sheep when his coat got long.
Hamish loved nothing better than getting amongst it - as you can see by the muddy feet in the pic above. He was independent, fun loving, loyal, a risk taker and met big scary dogs head on.
Hamish was a real dog. He was my real dog.

Haha, little dogs are often fearless with the big ones!
ReplyDeleteThey are all loveable when you know them.
RIP Hamish
Yep - dogs are my favourite people Kylie.
DeleteMy mate Bird has a mini poodle shitsu cross and he is boss! This young man has swag and I call him the Black Prince, or occasionally Harry the Bastard (after the Young Ones' landlord.)
ReplyDeleteHarry has it all over my rottweiler cross. She's in awe of him and obeys his every command, which unfortunately sometimes involves her being his thug.
It's so weird isn't it, to look at dogs like Hamish and know they are descended from wolves.
Yes even cutie-pie pooches like Hamish revert to type quickly given the opportunity. As cute as he was, in his teenage days he was relentless with the birds who came to splash in the bird bath on the deck. And he brutally disembowelled and decapitated many soft toys. I think humans are similarly primitive given half a chance - watching the relentless pack mentality on Facebook is a dead giveaway.
DeleteWhat a sweet pup Hamish must have been. If we had crossed paths with you we would be petting Hamish and telling him how cute he is. We love all the doggies we meet. Wish we had met Hamish.
ReplyDeleteHe was quite sociable when he was young Robin so he would have enjoyed meeting you too. Like the rest of us he got a bit grumpy in his old age :)
