Robin I found the original meme, adapted it slightly to create my own version and have it on my desktop to remind me. The other night my mind was racing along a scenario that was completely invented. I was getting really distressed and it wasn't even real! But luckily I was able to remember to say to myself: 'don't believe your thoughts' and stop the runaway train immediately. It's the first time I've experienced such a quick, clear result and I'm very relieved because I need to do it more often to maintain my equilibrium.
I'm guessing the thoughts of many in the US right now are racing madly along and I do feel for you. I hope you can find a way through what I think is about to unfold, and I hope this meme helps you in some small way. I have often used the 'being in the moment' trick when I'm out surfing. Sometimes when you are alone, a long way from shore sitting out there waiting for a wave your mind can start thinking 'what if?' It can be so compelling you decide to paddle in but that has only happened a couple of times when I decided I really should trust my instincts sometimes. Usually I just focus on the here and now and now, there is no shark attacking me. If one does, I'll have to deal with it then. There are regular sightings of Great Whites and Bronzies here on the south coast so I'm not being dramatic, but the reality is that confrontations are negligible.
I think I will chant this all day on Election Day. Thank you.
